15 Jun 2013: Immig/ration: Are our legal and ESOL provisions for immigrations fit for purpose?

LaunchEventOtherImmigration to the UK may currently be falling, but the country still has a substantial population from outside of its borders, many of whom are not on the route to citizenship. This report investigates the policies of the UK government and the work of charities towards the integration of those who have moved here. Two specific case studies in legal representation and help learning english for non-native speakers (English Speakers of Other Languages) show that the current level of support does match up with many needs. But not all needs, and often not in the best way. The report suggests implementing a new online hub for everything immigration based, either as a standalone entity or as an extension of the new gov.uk portal, in order to increase legal transparency. It also proposes that english teaching might move further online so as to reach more people, and suggests in a local case study areas in which space for teaching could be found.
