ohawCornerOxPolicy is participating in the One Hour A Week campaign! Not sure what this is? The One Hour a Week campaign is an exciting new initiative that the Oxford Hub are running in conjunction with OUSU and RAG this year. The aim is to make it easy for busy students to give one hour of their week to a worthwhile cause in the local community. Click here to go to the OHAW pages

Our vision is that volunteering and engagement with the local community become the norm among Oxford students.

ohaw1Firstly, you could contribute to our policy blog. You’d write short articles of 500-1200 words either covering existing policies or proposing new ideas in fields relating specifically to social policy & the third sector. We’d be happy to accept video or audio submissions too. This is a good option if you have enough time to produce high-quality articles, but you’d like to help out in a way that fits your schedule and is flexible.

ohaw2Secondly, you could be involved in our research teams. Because these groups meet for more than one hour a week, we’re offering a ‘research team lite’ whereby you’d meet in a big group of other people once a week to find the solutions to specific policy problems, or to find the answers to questions on which our report hinges but need significant research coverage. If you get involved with the full team, this still counts for one hour a week, but you’ll be registered separately.

ohaw3Thirdly, and perhaps most interestingly, you could be a Primary Researcher. You’d work in teams with other people on the One Hour A Week Campaign to get an idea of what the student and local community are thinking with regards to current public policy in areas such as the environment & education. It would be at your discretion how you went about this, but we’d be on hand help out. This role would give you fantastic experience for the future, and make a world of difference at the same time. We’d use your findings to target our research and highlight under-reported problems. It would also conform to the label on the tin: One Hour A Week.

To qualify as participating in the campaign, you should register on the Oxford Hub’s dedicated web pages first. You’ll hear back with more details of what to do next. If you have any questions about any of these roles, or how the process works, send an informal email toasking anything you’re unsure of – no matter if big or small. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to specify which project you’d most like to work on in email conversation with our coordinators. Please note that due to the organizational nature of this system our response may be slightly delayed.
